Participate in Guided Hunts With GETM WATERFOWL
As you prepare for your Illinois Snow Goose Hunt, here’s a guide to what to expect on the day of your adventure—from early arrival at the meeting location to gearing up with your guide and settling into the blind. This outline ensures you’ll be well-prepared for an exciting and successful hunting experience.
On the morning of your Illinois Snow Goose Hunt, arrive at our meeting location just off Interstate 57 outside Ullin, Illinois, by 5 am. Since nearby gas stations may be closed, come prepared with food and drinks from the day before. At our heated mobile office, you’ll sign liability waivers, complete harvest forms for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and have the option to purchase apparel. Complimentary coffee, water, and other drinks are available.
After check-in, meet your guide, who will provide the day’s weather forecast, recent hunt reports, a migration update, and insights on the hunt. You’ll then follow your guide to the hunting location in your vehicle, where they’ll help load your hunting gear into our Polaris Ranger UTVs and transport your group to the blind.
Upon arrival, your guide will adjust the decoys, calling systems, and motion systems to prepare for the hunt. Our Illinois Snow Goose blinds, designed in custom A-frame styles and manufactured A-frames, are heated for comfort. If you’d like, you’re welcome to assist with setup and learn more about the process, though it’s not required.
As shooting time approaches, your guide will review safety rules and expectations. Feel free to ask any questions during this briefing. At daybreak, you’ll see birds flying in from nearby wildlife refuges like Ballard County Refuge and Horseshoe Lake Conservation Area. With our proximity to the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, we typically observe a steady flow of migrating geese.
A typical day yields around 15-20 birds per blind, with potential for more on good days. Enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant, then resume hunting, as Illinois regulations allow hunting until 30 minutes after sunset. The final hour can be particularly successful, as geese have difficulty distinguishing decoys in low light.
After the hunt, your guide will help you return to your vehicle and load any harvested birds and gear. Tipping guides is customary, with a minimum of $20 per person recommended. Since you may not have the same guide the next day, we suggest tipping at the end of each hunt. Note that waders are not necessary, as you’ll primarily hunt dry corn, soybean, and winter wheat fields.
